Payphones With free Wi-Fi in NYC

Almost 2 weeks ago a new scheme was rolled out in New York City, that equipped payphones with free to use Wi-Fi. Whilst still being a pilot programme, the scheme offers access to Wi-Fi to anybody within range, both residents and the tourists that swarm upon the city all year round.

The wireless signal of the pay phone booths will span a 100 – 200 foot radius, and the network will appear as “Free Wi-Fi” or “NYC Free Public Wi-Fi” on all Wi-Fi enabled devices. The network isn’t password protected, but when you launch your browser, you will be required to agree to terms and conditions before surfing the web, with no limits on usage.

At the moment there are 10 phone booths that have been equipped for the pilot scheme. There are 6 booths in Manhattan, 2 in Brooklyn and 1 in Queens. There are plans to roll the scheme out to a wider audience, including those in the Bronx and Staten Island. A map of the Wi-Fi phone booths can be found here.
