Tweet Powered Olympic Light Show on London Eye
Every night of London’s Olympic games, the iconic London Eye will be lit up thanks to EDF Energy, as you may have already seen.
The energy firm will be using the opinions of Twitter users that convey their thoughts on the games using the #Energy2012 hashtag, evaulating the percentage of happiness and lighting up the wheel to that percentage, as seen in the concept below. Experts on “sentiment analysis” developed an intuitive algorithm for the effect according to EDF Energy.
“Social sentiment tracking” splits the tweets into positive and negative conversations, and puts them through some software, which converts them into a light show. Pretty cool.
The effect it could have on Team GB athlete’s spirit can be outstanding, to know that an entire nation is behind you must be a great boost. However, this is surely prone to trolling. Imagine a blackout caused by a huge number of negative tweets and the counter effect on the athletes.
Daley Thompson, an inspiring legendary athlete, has helped initiate the light show, stating “We want to make the EDF Energy London Eye a spectacular showcase of national support for the athletes – and one that will inspire them every night of the Games.”
